WayV:Frequency

WayV returns with their sixth mini-album FREQUENCY, bringing a mix of hip-hop, R&B, and classic K-pop influences that feel both nostalgic and fresh. Right from the start, Frequency pulls listeners in with an old-school hip-hop vibe, full of classic ad-libs and a 90s/early 2000s-inspired beat. The rap flows effortlessly, perfectly matching the instrumental, and the final chorus has a fun “nananaa” moment that nods to both old-school K-pop and rap. It’s vibey, energetic, and an undeniably strong opener.

The energy keeps going with High Five, an upbeat, feel-good track that does exactly what it sets out to do. YangYang mentioned they were looking for something easy-listening, and they delivered just that—but with extra flair. The pre-chorus has gorgeous R&B piano elements that add to the song’s smooth yet high-energy feel, making it impossible not to love.

Then there’s Filthy Rich, real R&B is BACK real yearning is BACK! The line “If I get you, I’m filthy rich” sets the tone perfectly, and the song builds around that emotion. This is really WayV’s bag for real and every member individually is incredibly talented but together they create the perfect blend. The production is sleek, with a standout bridge and a clappy midsection that adds texture. Every moment is intentional, making this one of the strongest tracks on the album.

Twist is straightforward but enjoyable, with a solid beat and an easygoing charm. It might not be the biggest standout, but it holds its own, keeping the momentum of the album going. Call Me, on the other hand, closes things out beautifully. Xiaojun and Ten’s opening vocals immediately pull you in, setting the perfect R&B tone. There’s so much warmth in the track, from the soft piano to the gentle beats. Lyrics like “kisses through the phone” and “hanging on” bring that longing, nostalgic feeling that WayV does so well.

Overall, FREQUENCY is a well-balanced project that blends nostalgia with modern influences, showcasing both WayV’s versatility and their ability to execute different styles flawlessly. The strong production, sharp rap deliveries, and smooth vocal performances make this a standout mini-album. While some tracks could push their concepts a bit further, it remains a cohesive and highly enjoyable release. It’s a solid addition to their discography and another step forward for WayV’s evolving sound.
