IVE returns with their third EP, EMPATHY, an album that continues their exploration of diverse sounds while staying true to their signature polished, high-energy pop. This project leans heavily into danceable grooves, disco influences, and crisp vocal delivery, reinforcing the group’s ability to seamlessly blend classic and modern elements.

The album opens with Rebel Heart, setting the tone with a punchy, energetic instrumental that immediately grabs attention. Tracks like Flu and Attitude showcase IVE’s love for disco-inspired melodies, with Flu in particular standing out thanks to its Jackson 5-esque guitar rhythms and airy falsetto chorus—an area where songwriter Maria Marcus (who has worked on Feel My Rhythm and NOBODY) truly shines.

You Wanna Cry takes a nostalgic turn, with a chorus reminiscent of Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance with Somebody, adding a fun pop-rock edge to the album. Meanwhile, Thank U leans into a softer, more sentimental sound, perfectly matching the dreamy visuals teased before the release. Liz, a standout vocalist in the group, makes her mark here with songwriting credits, further solidifying her presence beyond just vocal performance.

The highlight of the album, TKO, is a return to IVE’s bolder, hip-hop-infused sound seen in tracks like Baddie, HEYA and Holy Moly. A perfect blend of Rei’s high energy rap verses, buttery vocal sections, and a hard-hitting instrumental, it feels like the most natural evolution of their sound. With contributions from songwriters like Sofia Kay (TXT’s Sugar Rush Ride) and Sean Fischer (NCT 127’s Black Clouds), the track perfectly balances attitude and refinement, making it an immediate standout.

Overall, IVE EMPATHY successfully blends dance-pop, disco, and hip-hop influences while maintaining IVE’s distinct vocal color. The album is fun, vibrant, and full of energy, but its true strength lies in its ability to channel nostalgia while still feeling fresh. While some moments may feel more familiar than groundbreaking, IVE EMPATHY proves that IVE has carved out a space where they thrive.
